Sales of photographic equipment and after-market sales (film and
developing) are HUGE in November and December. It's a small window
within which purveyors of cameras, film and developing services need
to make big sales in order to make their year. Local retailers are
finding it more and more difficult to compete with the "big boxes":

Retail Spending (or "Shop Til' You Drop")
Christmas is make it or break it time for many retailers. As such,
they spend a disproportionate amount of their ad budgets in the 4th

Holiday retail sales expected to jump 5.7%
After more than a year of constant challenges, the retail industry
is beginning to show strength. According to the National Retail
Federation (NRF), total holiday retail sales are projected to grow
by 5.7% over last holiday, bringing holiday spending to $217.4B.
Holiday sales in 2002 increased 2.2% to $205.6B, the lowest rate in
at least 10 years.

Tis' The Season
I love Christmas, but I hate Christmas shopping. I
can never think of what to get people. These days, everybody always
seems to have everything... well, except for my kids who still don't have
a Porsche or a Hummer.
So I'm a sucker for the mall. I go in, walk around for hours and hope
that something will catch my eye. I'm always in desperate need of ideas
for gifts. And I'm fairly certain that I'm in the vast majority in this
regard, judging by the look of hopelessness on most of the other guys'
faces at the mall.
Retailers know this, too.
Here's a way to turn this problem into an opportunity. Take any one of
our Christmas-themed jingles and develop it as a featurette program.
Themes can include: "Gifts Ideas For Hard To Buy For People," "Great
Gifts For Guys," "Gift Ideas Under $25"... and on and on. Send a letter
to all of your advertisers and invite them to participate... for a price.
A typical featurette will be hosted by one of your personalities and may
showcase up to five different retailers. Retailers love these features
as it is a very cost effective way to increase their reach and
frequency. And I think you'll find that your audience will love these
features as well.
Your sales manager certainly will because five advertisers sharing a
spot at 25% of ratecard each generate a per spot gross of 125% of your
ratecard.
